I keep thinking of the ereaders as something inevitable, but, hell, I’m in no hurry. Serveral of the most recent books I read don’t have e-versions anyway.

Thanks for this post. I vehemently oppose e-readers but had not considered the effects on the populace as a whole until I read the article in Poets & Writers. Perhaps my opinion is softer now, or a bit more open minded. I had not thought of reading as a social act, more personal. The article made me think, evaluate. Thanks!

I just heard on NPR this week that Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake is going to start selling used books online (Amazon?) to raise funds, since they get some very markable books in. I’ve bought books from Amazon from other regional GW markets, consciously from among a dozen or so sellers sometimes. I hope this doesn’t mean that the scores will dry up, though.

I’ve come to love books from Goodwill. I used to obsess over getting hardback books, but now I reserve those for books that I know will be “loved hard” and need the extra protective cover layer. However, there is still something almost sacred about opening a brand new pristine collectors book- something that can never be replicated by an e-reader.
